Handbag and Purse Design - Sewing it all together

Now that you have read about the creation of your purse fabric the next step is construction. We have chosen a tote style design because of its popularity...and with good reason. It is a classic, simple style that has been loved for years. Even though the pattern and style may change, tote bags, hobo, or shoulder bags....they all go through the same basic steps.

Our own original transparent purse pattern is placed on top of the painted fabric in order to choose the best front and back design placement.

The handbag is then cut. The same pattern is used to cut the lining.

White interfacing - Special areas on the inside of the bag are marked for interfacing (this will never be seen but gives the purse extra body in certain areas and gives the bag a softer feeling inside).

Upholstery fabric is often used to trim the top of purses. This is a classic black basket weave pattern.

The bag then goes through several stages of sewing, pressing and attaching
interfacing, and lining along with many small steps necessary in putting the bag together. All necessary in producing a professional look and feel.

This is a finished bag showing the bottom. Notice there are only two small seams on each side edge. This allows the painted design to flow unbroken from front to back.

Some hand bags may have a small face decoration added to the top trim. These are all sculpted by Bill from terra cotta clay.

Magnetic closures are then added to the inside bag lining. Pockets are also added (black, red, or patterned) if it has pockets.
